Jump Up Drum & Bass With AC13

How I'd use my debut sample pack to get jump up track ideas going, like Hedex, Turno, SOTA and Bou. Out the box, working straight away with what I've got, with minimal processing.

    My notes from this video

    01

Sidechain the bass with volume automation

    Watch 1:12

A quick volume automation on the bass does the sidechaining, so it ducks when the snare hits. That gives it some room in the mix and makes it feel a bit more dynamic. Do it again for the kick, and double it up so you've got a little bit more room on it.

    02

    Turn a one-shot into a sub

    Watch 1:57

The two layers on my downbeat were cool, but there was some frequency missing in the low end. Chop a one-shot onto its own channel and cut out the higher frequencies. Essentially you use it as a sub with a little bit of low mid in there.

FabFilter Pro-Q 3 on the chopped one-shot channel, with one High Cut band at 290.38 Hz and 30 dB/oct
High cut at 290.38 Hz, 30 dB/oct. Only the sub and some low mid stay.
    03

Push the responses a little off the beat

    Watch 2:40

Put the responses on an offbeat a little bit, so they don't feel too robotic. I layer some of them for a weird offbeat kind of feel, with a triplet, and make them a little shorter.

    04

A grit layer for more edge

    Watch 3:14

To match the energy of the initial stab, I add a grit layer from the presets instead of just giving it more brightness. It gives it a little bit more edge, because we're going for something quite aggressive here. To go even further, pop Thermal on it or make the Serum patch a little bit more aggressive.

    05

    Automate the reverb mix

    Watch 5:40

Put a reverb on one of the layers and automate the mix, upwards towards the end and back down again. That gives it some room in the mix and fills it out a little bit more. I use Valhalla Supermassive on the Massive Vocal preset, with a short delay and a little bit of mix, and make sure it doesn't pick up too many low frequencies.

ValhallaSupermassive in Hydra mode on the Massive Vocal preset: mix 14.4%, delay 64.2 ms, warp 66.6%, feedback 40.6%, EQ high 4340 Hz and low 1020 Hz
Massive Vocal preset, 14.4% mix, a 64.2 ms delay and the low EQ at 1020 Hz.
