A Full DnB Drop With AC13

I've got the first 16 bars of the drop ready, so it's time to formulate a switch and do another 16 bars after it into the breakdown. Drum & bass like Chase & Status, Bou, Hedex and Turno, in an episode from my course.

    My notes from this video

    01

Clone the patch for a variation

    Watch 2:27

Clone the patch before you change anything, so you don't lose your previous version. For the reese variation I go down an octave and mess around with the wavetable position. A different harmonic and different notes is nice, no need to overcomplicate it. Export it to the same mixer track as the original, so it has the same processing on it.

Not everything needs to change, it's nice to have some sort of repetition.

    02

Bounce the switch and work on the audio

    Watch 11:46

To make the second switch unique, I bounce it and work with the audio file instead of going back into the preset. Frequency shift it to see if you can get a higher or lower harmonic out of it. Cut the low mids you don't need and keep everything just slightly above that in mono, because those lower frequencies in stereo didn't sound very nice. Put Thermal on it again to see if you can push it even further.

FabFilter Pro-Q 3 on the bounced switch: a low cut on the full signal, and a second Low Cut band at 672.46 Hz, 72 dB/oct, set to Side
Pro-Q 3 with a low cut on the side at 672.46 Hz, 72 dB/oct, so the low mids stay mono.
    03

Wash out the drop with a filter and reverb

    Watch 22:58

For the resolve into the breakdown, I bounce the drop to one audio file and put a filter on it first, with the reverb after it. The reverb mix starts on zero, on the Massive Vocal setting. As the cutoff goes down, the reverb comes up and creates a nice washing out effect. Cut the lows out towards the end, otherwise the reverb picks up loads of nasty low end harmonic you don't want.

ValhallaSupermassive on the bounced drop: mode Hydra, preset Massive Vocal, mix 0.0%, delay 506.5 ms, warp 66.6%, feedback 40.6%
Massive Vocal with the mix on zero, before it comes up with the filter.
    04

Turn the glitch off for negative space

    Watch 27:27

Glitch the break fill with Gross Beat and some delay, then turn both off in the last quarter bar so you get negative space. Fill it in with a snare with a big white noise reverb. Gross Beat stays off for the first half of the break too, because it's just a bit too chaotic.

If the break feels a little bit sloppy, transient shape it. Give it some attack, reduce the sustain and replace its kick with your own.

    05

Open the arp up at the end of each note

    Watch 32:23

The arp needs to be a lot drier in the breakdown, because it's super loud in terms of reverb. I make a new macro that turns everything creating delay or reverb off when I turn it up. Automate that macro so every time the arp reaches the end of a note, it opens up. That gives it some space, like spatial kind of effects.
